Hermosa Beach Wins Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation
City Pledges to Conserve More Than 121 Million Gallons of Water in 2011
HERMOSA BEACH, CA – Thanks to local residents’ commitments to conserve water and reduce
waste, Hermosa Beach won the title of “Southern California’s Greenest City” for Earth Month
in the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation sponsored by the Wyland Foundation, Mayor
Peter Tucker said today.
Since April 1, Hermosa Beach has competed with cities throughout Los Angeles and Orange
counties to make the most online water conservation pledges. By the time the contest ended at
midnight on April 30, Hermosa Beach residents had made the most per capita conservation
pledges. In total, they promised to conserve 121,540,821 gallons of water, eliminate 421,711
pounds of waste from landfills, reduce plastic water bottle usage by 28,125 bottles and reduce
carbon dioxide output by 3,651,388.80 pounds—resulting in a cost savings to residents of
$289,285.81 over the next year.
